Introduction to BW/4HANA

In late 2013, SAP BW 7.4 was released, the first version of SAP BW developed to take
advantage of the SAP HANA platform. It included some new features specifically 
optimized for use on SAP HANA.

SAP BW/4HANA Overview

SAP BW/4 HANA is a new product which uses some features from legacy BW application and also some new features. SAP has redeveloped with new design principles and some functionalities which is no longer used is removed.

SAP BW/4HANA Design Principles
  • Simplicity: simple to use and build in BW/4 HANA, lower cost and development efforts
  • Openness: Integration with all systems.
  • Modern Interfaces: Easy to use new UI in eclipse.
  • High Performance: Use the power of SAP HANA to handle a large amount of data in real-time.

Simplified Data Model


SAP BW/4HANA has also removed other legacy SAP BW functionality. The SAP BEx
query designer is no longer supported; you must use the SAP BW query designer in
the BW modeling tool in Eclipse. Modeling in SAP GUI also isn’t supported; all model-
ing should be performed in the BW modeling tool in Eclipse. The SAP BusinessObjects BI content packages are being replaced by SAP BW/4HANA content packages.



Implementing SAP BW/4HANA


SAP BW/4 HANA can be implemented in 3 ways:

  1. New installation of SAP BW/4HANA
  2. System conversion of an existing SAP BW system
  3. Landscape consolidation of more than one SAP BW system into one SAP BW/4HANA


New Installation of SAP BW/4HANA

This approach is referred to as greenfield because it involves a clean installation of SAP BW/4HANA, with no customizations, objects, or legacy programs that need conversion. 

System Conversion of Existing SAP BW System

The first step is to migrate the system to SAP BW powered by SAP HANA 7.5 and then
convert all objects to SAP HANA-supported objects, such as Advanced DSOs and 
CompositeProviders.

Landscape Consolidation

Companies with multiple SAP BW system consolidates into a single BW system and then migrated to BW/4HANA.
